Hunters hill bungalow

A forever home, tucked away in a neighbourly cul de sac. For this project, we were tasked with renovating a forever home for a young family. The clients’ vision for the house included a European hotel-inspired ambience – one with a charming and inviting atmosphere, aiming for a ‘cute as a button’ appeal that would stand out at the end of the road. We strived to incorporate this charming quality into our overall design concept.

The Approach

Inspired by the original Californian Bungalow style of the front section of the house, our goal was to seamlessly integrate this aesthetic throughout the renovation. However, the extension at the back lacked any defining design characteristics, creating a disjointed appearance when juxtaposed with the front. Our objective was to harmoniously unite both sections, ensuring a cohesive and visually pleasing transformation. Since the client’s vision for the house included a European hotel-inspired ambience, we chose to integrate elements of European design with the Californian Bungalow style.

The Details

For this project, we opted for a neutral palette with pops of colour. The overarching colour scheme is a composition of warm whites, timber and blues.

For the kitchen, a statement island was in order, as this is the centre of the home where our clients would entertain often. An eye-catching deep blue shade perfectly ties in the kitchen and adjoining laundry/mudroom joinery. To tie in the bungalow-hotel aesthetic, we paired this joinery colour with Carrara marble benchtops and splashbacks.

In the master ensuite, we aimed to evoke a romantic ambience echoing the luxurious feel of hotel bathrooms. To achieve this, we introduced a soft pink vanity complemented by Carrara marble benchtops and tiles, infusing the space with an elegant charm reminiscent of upscale hotels. To add a touch of sophistication to the room, we also chose a delicate pink-striped fabric for the Roman blinds.

In the powder room, we captured the essence of 'Positano'– a coastal Italian paradise – by selecting a vibrant red-striped wallpaper and accent mirror. This choice imbues the space with a vibrant energy and a hint of Mediterranean flair, elevating the overall atmosphere of the room.

Lastly, we were tasked with sourcing and selecting furniture for the majority of the home.

For the dining room, we were briefed to select furniture that looked eye-catching and elegant but that their son could mess on without it being an issue. We took care to select family-friendly pieces, selecting an oak table and pairing it with their deep maroon vinyl leather armchairs that could easily be wiped down after spills.
